If you have the beauty blahs, changing your hairstyle is an easy way to update your look and boost your confidence. And, if you have had the same hairdo for more than a year, it's time to change it up just on principle. It's too easy to wear the same hairdo for too many years when you have a style you like and one that your hair will co-operate with. It's important to tweak your style on a regular basis to keep your look current and interesting. If however, you don't like the results, it can be quite traumatic, despite any assurances that "it's only hair and it will grow back."
What would your perfect hairstyle be?
A GOOD HAIRCUT:
- Reflects your personality. Do you like classic, put together and finished, or do you prefer casual, windblown and relaxed? Do you want to make a bold colour and cut statement with a style that is a look or do you prefer your tresses to be soft and feminine?
- Balances your proportions from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. Clothing isn't the only consideration in balancing your overall look.
- Fits your lifestyle and your ability to style it. The end result looks effortless.
Stylists are not clairvoyant so be sure to communicate what you have in mind if you don't like surprises. At the same time encourage them to make style suggestions. Their goal is the same as yours, and that is to have you look and feel beautiful and love your new 'do.
It's also a good idea to look through current magazines and collect photos of styles that you are drawn to in advance of your appointment. This will give your stylist a good idea of the direction you want to go. Don't expect your hair to look exactly the same. If you end up with a general feel of the look customized to your specific needs (hair texture, thickness, hairline) that's the perfect cut for you.
If you are looking to try someone new, a good way to find a great stylist is to ask a woman whose hair you admire. Women do it all the time. It's the ultimate compliment and she will be more than happy to recommend her stylist to you.
Most stylists offer complimentary consultations so take advantage of this service. During the consultation don't be afraid to ask questions: What style would they recommend for your hair and why? How easy will it be for you to maintain this look? What hair products do they recommend for your hair type? A good stylist should be asking you a lot of questions. Very few women like surprises. If you don't sense a good match, don't be intimidated. Try someone else.
Remember having a good hair day every day, not just the day you go to the salon is the goal. Gradual changes are always emotionally more comfortable than making a radical change all at once. That way, when you look in the mirror the woman you see is still you - only better.
